Grows in clumps, with tall stalks of bell-shaped, 5-petaled purple flowers. Buds are at the tip of these stalks, with blooming flowers in the middle and spent flowers at the lower end. White stigmas stick out from the middle of each flower. Stalks are sometimes reddish or purplish, and leaves are rough with toothed edges. Leaves are smaller further up the stalk. Often confused with related species Campanula rotundifolia, which is much smaller, has more delicate stems and leaves, and grows in more 'wild' areas.
