Common in low foothills and mountain meadows, and grassy slopes/hillsides. Bright red, round, ball-shaped center. There are several varieties, and a few closely related similar species, but this is the most common. The flowers may be fully yellow, yellow with darker yellow veins, or half yellow and half orange/red. The petals may be sharp and forked at the tip or more rounded. The leaves are slightly hairy, with a sandpaper texture. There are similar species/varieties commonly used in gardens and landscaping, typically ones with more red than wild varieties.
