A very common shrub, especially in the higher/rockier foothills. Tubular pinkish-white flowers in spring with five curled-over petals. Small, eye-catching red or reddish-orange berries in late summer and fall. Each berry is shiny, has a thin distribution of very tiny hairs along the surface, and ends at the tip with a small papery stick (the remnants of petals). Leaves are small, and vaguely circular, sometimes with 3 somewhat distinct segments, and always with visible veins, serrated edges, and with a dip at the base where connected to the stem. Woody brownish or reddish-gray twigs, stems and branches which are usually slightly fuzzy.
